Family Enrichment Resources

Why We Need Family Enrichment Resources: Children grow and thrive in a stimulating, healthy environment where their basic physical and emotional needs are met. Yet many parents are struggling to provide these essentials in today’s economic climate. These parents may seek help with providing food, clothing, and other supplies, or they may be struggling to cope emotionally with the demands of modern life, and looking for mental health support or assistance with child care. Though northern Virginia has a wealth of services available to help families, these individuals may need help accessing the services, or feel shame in asking for help.

How We Do It: FPY works to bridge the gap for families who are eligible for the programs that can help them to thrive, but have obstacles to accessing them. Through our website we promote the various comprehensive programs that can assist parents in accessing services, including the local 2-1-1 resource, Coordinated Services Planning, and the Fairfax County Family Resource Centers. In the next phase of the program, we plan to expand our activities on many fronts, by (1) Assisting with the promotion of the Nurturing Parenting training program, Family Resource Centers, and the Befriend-A-Parent mentoring program to enhance participation by our target group; (2) Developing a parent-to-parent support program (adult mentoring) in cooperation with CRS & DFS, and (3) Creating an FPY Parents’ Handbook which will give tips on various challenges that face parents in crisis, and detailed information on Northern VA resources just for parents and youth.

Results:

Anticipated project outcomes include: (1) Parents who struggle in areas of basic needs, child care, and mental health will be provided with an array of supports to allow them to meet their own needs and those of their children (2) Demand and community support for programs that educate and empower families to meet their own needs will be enhanced; (3) Parents who struggle with mental wellness challenges will have a support network to help stabilize their children’s emotional environment.
