Mission

To minimize the number of youth involved in violence or other risky behaviors by providing the opportunity for all youth in Fairfax County, during non-school hours, to actively participate in challenging and enriching activities that promote positive academic achievement, social, recreational, and youth development outcomes in a safe and supportive environment.

Goals

·
To review the current after-school program in Fairfax County to determine program offerings (location, numbers, and ages of youth served, etc.) and address the gaps and barriers (facilities, transportation, resources, programs, etc.) where large numbers of youth are not being served.
·
To build collaborative partnerships among schools, community coalitions, local and state agencies, students, parents, and the private sector to develop a systematic plan to build capacity and insure substantial and sustained improvement in both the quality of after-school programs and the number of youth served by those programs.
·
To provide recognition, support, and training opportunities to those engaged in the fields of after-school activities and youth development.

 

Support On Suspension Task Force

Activities

The Support On Suspension Program

Mission

To develop a program that provides academic support, in a focussed setting, to students who are suspended from a Fairfax County school for a period of one to thirty days and creates respect for authority to help students improve their self-esteem, attitude, and behavior that may have contributed to being suspended.

Goals

·
To partner with the Fairfax County Public School system and community based organizations to provide services to suspended students.
·
To maximize the number of students returning to school with no further suspension.
·
To maximize the number of students maintaining their academic performance while on suspension.

Mission

To ensure that every young person in Fairfax County who wants or needs a mentor has a caring, involved, effective mentor.

Goals

·
To educate the community to the needs and benefits of mentoring and to build support for mentoring.
·
To facilitate the recruitment, training, and referral of mentors
·
To assure the maximized quality and capacity of mentoring.
·
To facilitate the ongoing operation of the Mentor Providers Council
