Performing Arts at the Heart of Literacy Program (PAHLP)

PAHLP students made their debut this spring in a WCC season concert and sang in other community performances. One student did so well she was promoted to WCC's most advanced ensemble, and sang with WCC, the City Choir of Washington, and the Filene Orchestra in the US premier of The Lord of the Rings at the Filene Center, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. PAHLP students will complete the 2007/08 concert season with a West African Culture Concert, and several performances at the new Mason Festival of the Arts (song and dance, drumming, The Magic Flute by Mozart, and a concert at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall).

Bridging the Gap: The Many Faces of Youth Depression

Thanks to all who attended the 4th annual YSAD conference held May 13, 2008, The Many Faces of Youth Depression. Many attendees have requested copies of several of the resources that were presented at the conference. For those of you who were unable to attend we hope that you will find these materials helpful.

2008 Mental Wellness Conference Survey Results (pdf - 1.05 MB)

Understanding and Addressing The Many Faces of Youth Depression (pdf - 1.06 MB) is YSAD's 4th annual resource guide. Feel free to make copies and share widely. For those interested in ordering quantities of The Many Faces of Youth Depression guide or the 2007 Emergent Adulthood Resource Guide contact us to discuss quantities and cost. The Mood Map is another resource we developed and distributed at the conference. This handy booklet allows an individual to keep track of his/her mood and the factors often associated with mood changes on a daily basis. Individual worksheets cover a week at a time and may be printed to serve as refills for the booklet (pdf - 10kb). To order quantities of the printed Mood Map or either of our resource guides contact Susan Lydick at Susan.Lydick@fairfaxcounty (703-324-5292)
